PURPOSE  This continuing education presentation is designed to update dentists and auxiliaries on the management and treatment of child dental patients, including those with special health care needs.

 

OBJECTIVES  This course will enable participants to:

  • Recognize the dental and soft tissue features that put a child at greater risk for early childhood caries (ECC)
  • Identify the changes in the use of fluoride over the past decade
  • Identifying aberrant eruption problems.
  • Determine how to work-up a child with periodontal disease
  • Differentiate acid erosion due to acid foods versus gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Familiarize uses of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) in dental trauma cases
  • 

TARGETED AUDIENCE   Pediatric dentists, general dentists, specialists, hygienists and dental assistants

CREDIT  The College of Dental Medicine at Georgia Health Sciences University is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.

Dr. Keel

Dr. Martha Ann Keels, received her dental degree, certificate in pediatric dentistry and PhD in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina and appointed as a clinical associate in 1986 at Duke Children’s Hospital. In 1990, she established the Pediatric Dental program and is currently Chief of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Keels is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Keels holds Fellowships in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and is a member of several national and international associations and societies. She is a member of OKU, the dental honor society and has served in many organizations at the regional and national level.
Dr. Keels was a recipient of the NIH Dentist-Scientist Award, and has been recognized for her research efforts as a Pfeiffer Foundation Research Fellow, and being named the recipient of the Quintessence Award for Research Achievement and the Dr. Derek Turner Postdoctoral Research Award in Clinical Sciences.

 

MCG FACULTY

Dr. Steven M. Adair, Course Director, received his dental degree from the University of North Carolina, and his Master’s degree and certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Iowa. He is Professor and former chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.  Dr. Adair is editor-in-chief of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, editor of Pediatric Dentistry and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He has served on the Commission for Dental Accreditation and the National Board Test Construction Committee.  He also has served as a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Air Force.

Rooms have been reserved at the Hilton Oceanfront Resort for course registrants at a special rate of $169.50 plus $8 parking per night, single or double occupancy, plus 11% tax. The block of rooms will be released September 2, 2011. After this date, rooms are available on a space-and-rate availability basis only. Reservations must be canceled 8 days prior to arrival.
