Welcome to Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine

Welcome to Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Since my arrival in 2002, I have been most impressed with the work ethic and high caliber of our residents. With representation from all surgical subspecialties in our hospitals, we offer our residents a broad education and excellent experience in a wide variety of general and regional anesthetic techniques. Our faculty, residents and fellows, nurse anesthetists and support staff help to give our department a friendly, warm and team-oriented spirit, and I believe our patients have come to appreciate this.

Dr. Perry Volpitto established our department in 1937. Under his leadership and vision, our residency program, the first in the South, and only one of a handful of major postgraduate training programs for anesthesiology in the U.S., was born. We continued to grow under Drs. Zack Gramling and Robert Crumrine. I am very proud to continue this vision and spirit of leadership in anesthesiology.

Our research laboratories, which includes recruits from Boston University, Duke, and Harvard, conduct high-level research such as in vivo video microscopy, new drug development, and nanomedicine.

We offer solid research, education and clinical training here at the Medical College of Georgia at GRU. You have my firm commitment to work with you. Come be a part of our team and grow with us as we explore new and exciting areas of anesthesiology in the 21st century!

C. Alvin Head, M.D.

Professor and Chairman
