Center for Pain Management

The Center for Pain Management in the anesthesiology department is a specialized service within the GRU healthcare community. We offer quality medical and rehabilitative services to patients of all ages suffering from acute, chronic and cancer-related pain. The Center provides multidisciplinary pain management using state-of-the-art procedures, implantable technologies, and individualized medication regimens. We develop comprehensive programs to address the medical, psychological, spiritual, and social concerns of our patients and their families.

We are dedicated to excellence in patient care by continuously improving the quality of our services and education of our health care professionals.

We therefore encourage full patient participation as a treatment partnership (Treatment Agreement). After treatment with us has ended, our patients will return to their referring providers and we will remain available for future consultation

Inpatient Pain Service

The Inpatient Pain Service provides the highest quality care to patients in the hospital setting at GR Health and the Children’s Hospital of Georgia. Our emphasis is on interventional pain management in the perioperative setting (before, during and directly after surgery), acute pain, and other  conditions. We focus on the needs of our patients, providing the best pain treatment possible, including invasive catheters, implantable devices, and pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods of pain management. We practice as an integrated care team of physicians and allied health providers. We educate physicians and allied health personnel as well as incorporate research programs to improve patient care.

Pain Clinic

The Pain Clinic expands chronic pain management to the outpatient setting. Patients are treated  for chronic painful conditions as well as cancer-related pain using such technologies as radiofrequency ablation, fluoroscopically guided injections, implantation of  spinal cord stimulators, and neuromodulating medication therapy.

Complementary techniques including acupuncture and psychological services are also available. Our treatment goals are functional restoration and improved quality of life. We work closely with our patients’ primary care physician/referring physician and offer consultative and interventional services. Though we do not offer an opioid maintenance clinic for chronic pain patients, we will be happy to review the current treatment regimen and make recommendations to the referring physician.

Our main clinic is located at Georgia Regents University in Augusta. We also have clinics at the Aiken Neuroscience Center in Aiken, SC, and the MCG Group Practice Site in Lake Oconee, GA.

For cancer-related pain, we have an established Cancer Pain and Palliative Care Clinic. A multidisciplinary team including a pain physician, psychologist, pharmacist, social worker, and representatives from pastoral care, nursing, and physical therapy are available to meet the needs of our patients.
