The Anesthesiology Clerkship consists of a 4-week rotation in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. The clerkship provides an opportunity for medical students to gain basic knowledge of the field and develop fundamental technical skills. Our clerkship introduces students to the important role of anesthesiologists as perioperative physicians and the to the daily challenges faced in providing anesthetic care.

Hands-on learning experiences are complemented by a lecture series designed just for the medical students. Readings from the textbook, Basics of Anesthesia, generally correlate with the daily student lecture series. We encourage students to discuss the reading list topics with their assigned resident to gain a clear understanding of important principles in our specialty.

Medical students will have daily assignments to various locations including the main adult operative room, cardiac anesthesia room, obstetrical anesthesia suites, preoperative clinic, pain clinic and the Children's Medical Center. A typical day on the elective begins when the student and resident-preceptor prepare the operating room for the day's cases. The student should accompany the resident to meet the patient in the holding area of the operating room, where the patient is interviewed and examined and an anesthetic plan is discussed.

 

Under supervision, the student is expected to participate in every aspect of the patient's care including placement of monitors, airway management, and intravascular catheter, as well as anesthetic maintenance, planning for emergence, post-operative care, and pain management. Students will have the opportunity to observe regional or nerve block anesthesia procedures, and may be able to participate as well. The resident and attending physicians provide informal teaching sessions during the course of the day. Later in the afternoon, students usually hear a lecture given by anesthesiology faculty. Medical students are also encouraged to attend our resident conferences as well as mandatory weekly Grand Rounds.
