Clinical Training

Core Curriculum

Anesthesiology Critical Care (ACC) training is provided at the Georgia Regents University and Georgia Regents Medical Center, which includes a 478-bed adult hospital, a medical office building with more than 80 outpatient clinics in one setting, Critical Care Center, which houses the region's only Level I Trauma Center, and a 154-bed Children's Hospital, which includes the region's only Level 3 Neonatal ICU and Pediatric Trauma Center. MCG Health currently provides trauma care for 15 counties in Georgia and several counties in South Carolina.

We strictly follow ACGME guidelines to not exceed an 80-hour work week.

Lectures

Diactic teaching is accomplished through a number of conferences including:

• Daily morning and noon bedside rounds
• Fellows' didactic conference
• Critical care teaching conferences
• Grand rounds
• Morbidity and mortality conferences
• Fundamental Critical Care Support workshops

Fellows will be expected to attend and actively participate in all anesthesiology department conferences. They will present complex cases at M&M conferences and be prepared to contribute to the discussion of cases presented by faculty. ACC fellows are responsible for medical student and junior resident education through daily bedside rounds and direct supervision of care and will  also participate as instructors in the FCCS workshops taught at GRU.

Rotations and Electives

ACC fellows rotate in several of the ICUs at the Georgia Regents Medical Center. Specific orientation to each unit will take place during the first few days of rotation. The Pre-rotation Counseling Document will need to be completed at this time. The individual units and their specialty include:

• Surgical/Cardiothoracic ICU (12 beds)
• Trauma ICU (12 beds)
• Neuroscience ICU (10 beds)
• MICU (24 beds)

The rotation schedule is as follows. There is the possibility for limited flexibility such that a fellow may, for example, opt for an additional month in MICU if scheduling permits.

 

SICU/CT ICU	approx 7 months
Trauma/Critical Care Services	approx 1 month
Neuroscience Service/Neuro ICU	approx 1 month
MICU	approx 1 month
CT Anesthesia/Echocardiography	approx 1 month (elective)
Burn Unit, Doctor's Hospital	approx 1 month

Fellows are evaluated on a monthly basis using the 360 Evaluation System. Fellows meet regularly with the program director to go over their portfolio. A publishable research project and/or a grand rounds presentation will be expected prior to graduation.
