Student Promotions Committee

The Student Promotions Committee of the faculty of the School of Medicine is responsible for assessing the cumulative performance of the student during and at the completion of each academic year and makes its recommendations to the Dean of the School of Medicine.

Composition

The Promotions Committee shall consist of 24 members of the faculty and a chairman all of who are actively involved in teaching medical students. The 24 members shall be divided into four subcommittees. Each subcommittee shall have six members, including a chairman of the subcommittee. The members of each subcommittee shall be selected both from the basic science faculty and the clinical science faculty. One subcommittee shall be assigned to each of the four classes of the School of Medicine and shall follow that class until it graduates.

Appointments

  1. The members of the Promotions Committee, the chairman of the Promotions Committee and the chairmen of the subcommittees shall be elected by the Faculty Senate in accordance with the Constitution and Rules and Bylaws of the School of Medicine Faculty Senate.

  2. The chairman of the Promotions committee shall have a minimum of four years experience on a Promotions Subcommittee at the Medical College of Georgia. The term of office of the chairman shall be two years. The chairman shall be ex-officio non-voting member of all Subcommittees and a voting member of the Promotions Committee.

  3. Acting Chairman: In the absence of the chairman of the Promotions Committee, the chairman of the subcommittee for the graduating class shall act as chairman.

  4. Subcommittee Chairman: The chairman of a subcommittee shall have had at least two years of prior service on a subcommittee.

  5. Subcommittee executive secretary: Each subcommittee shall select an executive secretary. The executive secretary shall act as chairman in the absence of the chairman and shall assist the chairman in keeping minutes and records of subcommittee activities.

  6. Subcommittee membership: Membership of a subcommittee shall be limited to faculty with at least two years of service on the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia. No department shall have more than one member on a specific subcommittee. The membership shall consist equally of basic science and clinical faculty members.

  7. Ex-officio members: The Associate Dean for Students shall be an ex-officio non-voting member of all subcommittees and the Promotions Committee.

  8. One new subcommittee and a chairman for that subcommittee shall be elected annually for the entering first year class.
