Over the past few years, the Georgia Health Sciences University has undergone dramatic changes, so we can better treat our patients and train the future physicians of Georgia. This enrichment provides the opportunity to conduct research at the highest level. The College is expanding to accept more students and trainees to better serve our patients. Research amongst our faculty and trainees has grown exponentially, and we are  increasingly recognized for our efforts at the national level. Our goal is to become one of the premiere academic medical centers for state of the art clinical care, groundbreaking medical research, and premiere medical education. The Department of Medicine is helping to lead the way, with new leadership and faculty, novel clinical programs and  heavy  investments in research and education.

 

Nevertheless, we also embrace the importance of celebrating our past. To this end, the  Sydenstricker Society was revived. Virgil P. Sydenstricker was a leader in American Medicine and Departmental Chairman for 30 years.  The Society’s charter is to create collegiality among former and present members of the Department, foster collaboration with the community, and provide educational opportunities for all. This is accomplished through support of a yearly lecture by a national leader, and funding for MCG medical residents to present their research at major national and regional meetings.

As in years past, some of our trainees were supported by the Sydenstricker Society to present their research at major regional and national meetings. Overall support for these endeavors continues to have tremendous impact on both trainee and faculty development, institutional exposure and medical advancement, and it is stimulating to physicians at all stages of their careers.

To keep up the momentum, your continued support through contributions to the Society is essential, to support the annual meeting, and so our young physician investigators will have the opportunity to present their work on the national stage. These are exciting times at MCG, and we encourage you to help us grow and be  part of  our  future.
