Palmetto Pediatrics & Aiken Regional Medical Center

Palmetto Pediatrics is a hub of the outpatient experience for residents, located in nearby Aiken, South Carolina on the campus of Aiken Regional Medical Center. The Aiken experience allows residents to hone their primary care practices by immersion in all facets of community pediatric care.  Weekdays start with morning rounds in the newborn nursery, where residents follow newborns from the delivery room through their first few days in the hospital and into the outpatient clinic.  Residents are then challenged to increase their clinical efficiency providing sick and well-child care during morning and afternoon clinic sessions in a busy private practice setting.  Residents triage calls from concerned parents and can admit sick children to the local community hospital, providing continuity of care for children in the practice.  Residents and faculty also attend scheduled C-sections and high-risk deliveries, and occasionally provide level two nursery care for sick neonates.  This rotation provides an intimate learning environment with greater resident autonomy and individualized teaching to help residents prepare for life after residency.
