Child Health Discovery Institute (CHDI)

Request for Applications (2011)

Children’s research addresses important pediatric health concerns. The Medical College of Georgia has currently over 100 extramurally-funded children’s research projects across campus. The goal of the Child Health Discovery Institute (CHDI) is to increase and sustain the growth of high quality clinical, translational, and basic children’s research at the Medical College of Georgia.

The CHDI Pilot Award Program will enable investigators to collect pilot data to successfully compete for additional extramural awards from the National Institutes of Health and major foundations or associations. Year-long Basic and Advanced Pilot Award projects that establish new collaborations between practicing physicians and established scientists (MD/PhD or PhD), or CHDI investigators and other members of the community are strongly encouraged. Expert Pilot Award projects that facilitate collaborations between the CHDI and other Discovery Institutes are also sought. All proposals should focus on children’s research with an emphasis on improving child health. Applications meeting this baseline criterion of focus and that also address one of the following three (3) themes will be considered:

1. Child- and Family-Centered Research (CFCR): Applications are sought for Basic Pilot Awards (up to $25,000 each) or Advanced Pilot Awards (up to $50,000 each) that address important health concerns in neonates, infants, children, or teenagers followed at the Children’s Medical Center and Clinics.


2. Community-Based Pediatric Research (CBPR): Applications are sought for Basic Pilot Awards (up to $25,000 each) or Advanced Pilot Awards (up to $50,000 each) that address important child health concerns in the community. Priority will be given to projects led by Medical College of Georgia faculty collaborating with investigators in community medical practice, schools, or churches.


3. Compounds for Kids (CFK): Applications are sought for Basic Pilot Awards (up to $25,000 each) or Advanced Pilot Awards (up to $50,000 each) for preclinical or clinical testing of the safety, toxicity, or efficacy of novel compounds (drugs) and combination therapies that target important pediatric diseases.
