In 1828, institutional founder Dr. Milton Antony served as Professor of Diseases of Women and Children but it was not until 1922 that Pediatrics became its own department. In the decades that followed, the faculty established a reputation for excellence in the home for patient- and family-centered care, the Medical College of Georgia. In 2011, we achieved another First! We partnered with Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany to establish a material presence for our children's hospital in South Georgia. This latest milestone took place at the tail end of the centennial year for our hospital (1910-2010) and at the beginning of Phoebe's centennial year (1911-2011). In Augusta, you will find a children's team of health professionals that provides exceptional clinical care in a beautiful freestanding children's hospital that consistently and proudly ranks nationally in the top 10% in quality.

We are all extremely proud of our departmental passion for education that is reflected year to year in the high number of graduating seniors entering the field of pediatrics. As the sixth largest medical school in the country, we have the unique privilege of imparting pediatric knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to many Medical College of Georgia students. It is wonderful to see that so many of them are devoted to professional careers in pediatrics. When meeting with each of these future pediatricians, I am reminded of how their own pediatricians influenced their career choice. I also enjoy the idea that children choose their pediatricians and most have heard me say that "it is not whether you like working with children, but rather whether they like looking at you!" I have no doubt whatsoever that this new generation of pediatricians will significantly improve the health and well-being of our citizens.

In research, we continue to be blessed by a spectacular team of successful investigators, including our faculty members in the Georgia Prevention Center and in the Cancer Center. As a result, our scientists and clinicians collaborate to offer a continuum of pediatric mentoring experiences before, during, and after (residency, fellowships) medical school. Among pediatric departments, we continue to rank in the top quartile nationally in research funded by the National Institutes of Health, and recruitments of junior and senior physician scientists, clinical and basic PhD researchers, and other investigators with clinical research skills have further strengthened our ability to move Pediatrics forward.

While we continue to build upon a legacy of outstanding patient care, education and research at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, on a daily basis we practice what Sir William Olser said long ago, that is to "care more particularly for the individual patient than for the special features of the disease"...
