Founded in 1828, the Georgia Regents University (MCG) is the 13th-oldest continuously operating medical school in the United States and the third-oldest in the Southeast. MCG, Georgia's health sciences university, has more than 2,500 students in five schools: Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Studies and Nursing. Students come from most of Georgia's 159 counties. Students from other states and foreign countries comprise approximately 2 percent of MCG's student body. GRU offers modern classrooms and laboratories, the 540-bed GRU Medical Center, the Children's Medical Center, extensive outpatient clinics, residence halls, a student center, a wellness center and an outstanding medical education library with more than 164,984 books and bound journals and approximately 4,000 periodicals. With approximately 5,000 faculty, staff and residents, GRU is one of the largest employers in the Augusta area. The University System of Georgia reports that during the 2007 fiscal year, an additional 3,800 jobs resulted from spending related to the institution, and its overall economic impact on the area approached nearly $1 billion.

The mission of the Georgia Regents University is to discover, disseminate, and apply knowledge to improve health and reduce the burden of illness on society. In realizing its mission, GRU is committed to serving the people of Georgia, the nation, and the world by:

The Community

Augusta - home of Augusta National Golf Club and the prestigious Masters Tournament - is Georgia's second oldest and second largest city. Full of history, atmosphere, Southern charm, and activities to engage everyone's interest, Augusta is a vibrant and livable community with a cost of living that ranks among the most favorable in the United States. Sited on the Savannah River with convenient access to the city of Atlanta, the Georgia/Carolina Mountains, and the Georgia/Carolina/Florida coasts, Augusta offers a quality of life that is second to none.

Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine presently includes around 70 full time faculty, who are active in all phases of medical education, 58 residents, and around 40 fellows. The Medical College of Georgia is the founding school of the Georgia Health Sciences University and is the state's only public medical school. Celebrating its 182-year anniversary in 2010, the Medical College of Georgia is presently leading expansion of medical education in the State of Georgia with newly-established clinical campuses in Albany and Savannah, and a four-year campus in Athens that will seat its inaugural class on August 11, 2010. GHSU has a long tradition of excellence in education and clinical care and is one of four research-intensive universities of the University System of Georgia. It is comprised of schools of Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Studies, Medicine, and Nursing and is the sole academic institution in the State dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.
